There are a few terms I see thrown about in the media when discussing right and wrong. Some people believe in moral absolutes. Others talk about situational ethics or moral relativism. I do not know which side to choose.
Each of us has a sense of what is right or wrong; moral and immoral. What is obscene to one may be perfectly acceptable to another. These views differ between individuals, over time, between cultures and throughout history. I learned this much from my classes in Sociology.
I used to think that there are at least a few areas in which no gray exists. There must be some aspects of our existence that are cut and dry when it comes to morality. If I am honest with myself I must acknowledge that these views have changed as I have changed.
My point is simply that one must look within themselves to determine what is best for any situation one may find themselves in. There may be more than one right answer. The way to decide which answer to choose often comes down to what is easiest and most expedient.
Deciding what is right for ourselves is easy. Choosing what is best for others is not. Sometimes we must put our needs aside and choose what is best for all concerned. I am not saying one should play the role of martyr. I am saying that it takes strength to choose what is more difficult. Often the road less traveled leads us to a far better place.
